Use HPA Work from your AI tool

HPA Work has an MCP server, so AI tools such as Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT and VS Code can work on your boards, tasks, documents and agents for you. Add one address to your AI tool, sign in with your HPA account, and ask in your own words.

Before you start

  • You need an HPA Work account. If you've never used HPA Work, sign in at hpawork.com once first.
  • You'll sign in to your AI tool with your HPA account at accounts.hpasoftware.com. Use the same email as your HPA Work account, so the two are linked the first time you connect.
  • The server address is https://hpawork.com/mcp.

Connect your AI tool

Claude Code

In a terminal, add the server for all your projects:

claude mcp add --scope user --transport http hpa-work https://hpawork.com/mcp

Then start claude, type /mcp, choose hpa-work and Authenticate. Your browser opens to sign in. Tools that run Claude Code for you, such as T3 Code, use the same sign-in: authenticate once in a terminal, then start a new session.

Claude (claude.ai and the desktop app)

Go to Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, name it HPA Work, paste https://hpawork.com/mcp and click Add. Then click Connect and sign in. Custom connectors need a paid Claude plan; on Team and Enterprise plans an owner may need to add it for the organization.

Cursor

Add this to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or Settings → MCP → Add new server), then click Connect next to hpa-work and sign in:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "hpa-work": { "url": "https://hpawork.com/mcp" }
  }
}

VS Code

Run MCP: Add Server from the command palette, choose HTTP and paste the address, or add this to your mcp.json. VS Code asks you to sign in the first time Copilot uses it.

{
  "servers": {
    "hpa-work": { "type": "http", "url": "https://hpawork.com/mcp" }
  }
}

ChatGPT

Where your plan allows custom connectors, go to Settings → Apps & Connectors, turn on developer mode under Advanced if asked, then Create a connector with https://hpawork.com/mcp and OAuth sign-in.

Signing in

Whichever tool you use, it sends you to HPA Accounts. Sign in, then check the consent screen: it asks to use HPA Work as you. Click Allow. You stay connected until you remove the tool under Connected apps in your HPA account.

Things to ask

  • “What's on my plate today in HPA Work?”
  • “Show me the Marketing board, grouped by table.”
  • “Create a task in To do on the Website board: "Write the onboarding email for new clients", due Friday, high priority.”
  • “Move the onboarding email task to Done and comment that it's shipped.”
  • “Assign the Chief of Agents to the pricing page task and ask it to scope it.”
  • “Is there a brief waiting for me? Show it to me before I approve it.”
  • “What's in my Queue? Let's go through the agents' questions.”
  • “Summarise the Q4 plan document, then add a "Risks" section to the end of it.”
  • “What did Sam say in our chat today? Reply that I'll look tomorrow.”

What it can do

Your work
Your tasks across boards (overdue, due today, upcoming), notifications, your inbox, and marking things read.
Boards and tasks
Workspaces, people, boards and tables; create, edit, assign, move, archive and restore tasks; tables you can add, rename, recolour, reorder and delete.
Comments and chats
Read and post task comments, document chats and chat messages; reply, react, @mention agents, edit or delete your own messages, save and pin them.
Agents
Assign agents to tasks, read and approve their Task Briefs and Code Specs, see what they're working on and what a run did, and stop runs you started.
Queue
Answer agents' questions, approve, dismiss or adjust suggestions, talk one through with the Chief of Agents first, and snooze items.
Documents
List, read, create, rename, archive and restore documents as Markdown, add to the end of one, and reply to or resolve its comments.
Search
Find tasks, boards, documents, agents and messages by text.

Not yet: creating projects and boards, board settings, attachments, whiteboards, rewriting existing document text, and natural-language Ask search. Use the app for those.

It acts as you

  • Your AI tool can only see and do what you can in the app, on the boards and documents you have access to. Messages and changes appear under your name.
  • It asks you before anything that's hard to undo: deleting a table, archiving a task or document, deleting a message, or stopping an agent.
  • Approving a Task Brief starts the agent, and approving a Code Spec starts Codex, so your AI tool shows you the brief and only approves once you say yes.
  • Adding to a document puts new content at the end and never changes or removes what's already there, even while others are editing.

Troubleshooting

  • “Rejected on reconnect” or 401 after signing in: your HPA account probably doesn't have an HPA Work account yet. Sign in at hpawork.com with “Continue with HPA” once, using the same HPA account, then authenticate again.
  • The tools don't appear: start a new chat or session after signing in; most tools only load servers when they start.
  • Need to switch accounts: clear the sign-in in your AI tool (in Claude Code, /mcp → hpa-work → Clear authentication), then authenticate again.
